Voices for children

What was it like to take part in this project? Well,
with the swelling sounds of Dona nobis pacem a
constant background soundtrack, and the images
evoked by Rasha’s vivid accounts also swirling
through my mind, I can safely say that it had a huge
impact on me. But I find it hard to marshal the many
contrasting impressions and experiences: the fun of
a short project – rehearsing in different churches
(thanks to Monica for the lifts!); the sense of
camaraderie among the participants as the
rehearsals progressed; the excitement of working
with Hebe again – novelty and familiarity combined;
the added benefits of also seeing ‘old friends’ from
Hebe’s entourage, like Jussi, Eva, and Kirsten...
And then the evening of the concert itself – all the
musicians, the beautiful pieces, and the sense of
countering the horrors of the world with beauty,
harmony, humanity; the hope that despite the
powerlessness of each individual, we can still make
the world more humane... but also an awareness of
the arbitrariness of life, of our unmerited privilege
as Europeans; the contrast between our evening –
music and bake sale – and the scenes of starvation,
life-and-death decisions, and heart-rending
situations Rasha sketched; and therefore a reminder
of the responsibility we bear.
I find it impossible to reconcile these two parts of
the experience, and can only take comfort in trying
to heed Rasha’s call to take note, to share the
stories of the bravery of human beings in the face of
atrocities, and in being grateful for this opportunity
that allowed us all to contribute in a small way.
